Down 5 pant sizes! Woo! Hoo!

I went to the store the other day to try on some new pants. I decided to grab a size 16 thinking that would probably be a little small but a good place to start. Well...it was actually still to big! I am now down to a size 14! I haven't been in a size 14 since before I was pregnant with my daughter. That has been over 17 years ago. It felt really good to put on a cute pair of jeans. I have gone down from a size 24 to a 14 in almost 6months. I am feeling good and really glad I got the vertical sleeve surgery.

I had to say Goodbye to Michael

Yesterday, was a sad day for me. I had to say goodbye to my monkey, Michael. Michael has become very aggressive in the past few weeks.I know he's a monkey! But, he ended up biting my son Rick, who has helped me take care of him for the past 4 years. Then... the next day he ended up biting me. A pretty good bite I must say! We have been a very busy family and have moved into the city. So, it's kind of hard to own any animals. Plus, some new laws are coming into play on owning primates. I ended up giving Michael back to the lady I bought him from. She came to pick him up yesterday. So, now I am one of those stupid monkey owners who failed to take care of yet another primate. But, I must say it was a wonderful experience. I am not sorry that I took that chance on owning primates and I'm glad as of right now, we still have that right to make a decision to own a primate or to not own one.

I Lost a Total of 54 Ibs!

I am working into week 14 since my Vertical Sleeve surgery. I am feeling back to myself now. My energy is good and I feel great! I have lost a total of 54 lbs! I am falling out of my pants which is an awesome feeling. It is really nice to get out some of my fall clothes and not have to worry if my pants will be to tight. Actually, everything that I wear now is pretty loose even my tennis shoes. I am really glad I got this surgery done. I had a bit of a rough start with and infection and a rash but it was so worth the weight loss that I am experiencing. In the beginning of this journey I started at 278 my highest weight ever. I am now at 224 and my goal is 160. I have 65 more pounds to go.

My first Youtube video on my Vertical Sleeve surgery

A week Post Op

Well...today it has been a week since my Vertical Sleeve surgery. My highest weight was 278 when I started this whole process. My pre-surgery weight was 263.6. Now, a week later my weight is 258.6. I've been doing pretty well for this past week. Yesterday was my hardest day. I was very emotional and sore. They say that it is normal to have the weight loss blues because of all the changes that are going on in my body. But, it doesn't make those days any easier. My eating has changed drastically. I wouldn't even call it eating anymore. I get about 8 ounces of a protein shake which is spread throughout the day. I can get about 1 to 2 ounces of soup and then sips of low calorie liquids. My vitamin takes about 5 mins to eat. I split that into 3's and chew very carefully and swallow and wait a minute an then do it again. I know...it sounds very weird but I don't want to throw it up. Now, with all this craziness it's really weird how much energy I have. I'm only getting maybe 300 calories but I go to sleep between 11 and midnight and then I'm wide awake at like 7:30am. I try to take naps like I always did and I just lie there. This is very weird for me because I have always been a sleeper. I loved sleeping! I have so much energy that I just don't know what to do with it. Tomorrow I get to check in with the doctor and see where I go from there. I'll keep you posted.

My Journey has just begun...

On June 8th 2011 I had my Vertical Sleeve surgery done. The surgery went well. I had to stay over night for observation. I was so uncomfortable there but it had to be done so they were sure my surgery went well. I had to do a swallow test the same day as surgery and everything checked out good. I was able to begin clear liquids after I passed the swallow test. I could only handle one Popsicle, ice chips, and sips of water. It's very weird...I can actually feel when the liquid hits my stomach. I get a small cramp every time. I'm hoping this will go away but I'm not sure if my stomach will always be sensitive like this. I came home on the 9th. I was very happy to sleep in my own bed and to see the kids. They were all very worried and excited to have me home. I had to give myself a shot today and will have to do this for the next 10 days. It's a blood thinner to make sure I don't get any clots. I was kind of worried about that but did just fine. I am slowly able to take more liquids in. I even tried to drink a cup of a protein shake today. My favorite combination is a Popsicle dipped in ice water.

My Vertical Sleeve Journey

The morning of 6/8/11 is the new begining of life for me. I will be getting the Vertical Sleeve surgery which means they will cut out 80% of my stomach. After the surgery I will be back on liquids then 2-4 weeks later I will work up to soft then 4-6 week work back up to cup size means 6 time a day. I'm excited looking for my goal weight to get back around 150. Even if it's close I will feel better. So. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Mom celebrates special day with 10 kids

Mom celebrates special day with 10 kids
Written by Sarah Ottney | | sottney@toledofreepress.com

Mother’s Day is a tenfold blessing for Charlene Rook.

The Oak Harbor woman and her husband, Chuck, have 10 children —one biological daughter, eight adopted children and one nephew in their permanent custody — ranging in age from 7 to 20.

It’s not the family they planned on — after they had their daughter, the plan was to adopt one boy — but it’s one Charlene said has been a blessing from God.

“I believe every child we have adopted or who has come to live in our home was meant to come here. It was a God thing,” she said. “I had to do some convincing with my husband, but we said yes to God and that’s how it was. The kids needed homes and parents and we were saying yes.”

The Rook Family

When their biological daughter, Meridian, was 6, the Rooks took in 11-year-old Jason as an emergency foster care placement and later adopted him. Before they knew if they would be able to adopt Jason, Charlene was searching online and came across 11-year-old Rick and his 9-year-old sister Katherine.

“As soon as I saw them, I told my husband ‘These two are going to come live with us.’ He said ‘No, I said one boy and that’s a boy and a girl,’” Charlene said. “Six months later, they came to live with us.”

Next came 8-year-old Jennie followed by 11-year-old Carla, both foster placements the Rooks went on to adopt.

Because Jason had severe behavioral issues, the Rooks became known as a couple who could handle hard-to-place children, either because of their behavior or because the children were older.

After their sixth child, the Rooks decided they were finished adding to their family and the time had come to stop fostering.

But two weeks before their fostering license was set to expire, the couple got a call that Chuck’s nephew, 1-year-old Tyler, and Tyler’s two siblings, 4-year-old Cody and 6-year-old Sally, were up for adoption.

“We said we’re adopting everyone else, we can’t not adopt family,” Charlene said. “So we added onto the house and brought them in.”

Last year, the couple took in another nephew, 12-year-old Dustin, of whom they currently have permanent custody. With so many kids — plus a menagerie of two monkeys, three dogs, two cats and a goose — things can get pretty chaotic in the Rook household, Charlene said.

“It’s a day-by-day thing because there’s so many different personalities under the same roof,” she said. “We all get along pretty well, but of course the kids come with different baggage and stuff like that which makes it difficult, but we work through it. The most important thing is sticking to it. Every day is like a roller coaster ride, but we just hang on tight and don’t let go. But it’s exciting, too. There’s a lot of excitement in this house.”

The couple are teaching their kids to give back to the community and the family regularly volunteers with Food for Thought, One Matters, Tent City and other local organizations.

Charlene also gives back as an AmeriCorps member with Adopt America Network, a nationwide nonprofit that matches adoptive children with families. She serves as family outreach coordinator in Toledo, helping families during and after adoption navigate the system and connect with resources, support groups and advice.

On Mother’s Day, Charlene will be counting her blessings for Jason, 20, Rick, 20, Katherine, 18, Carla, 18, Meridian, 16, Jennie, 16, Dustin, 13, Sally, 12, Cody, 10 and Tyler, 7 — her unplanned but divinely orchestrated family.

“It’s not easy to adopt in the first place so to have kids just come to you and it just work out that way, it was definitely meant to be,” she said.

Sitting on the Porch

Today, while working at the new house, we got to take some time out to enjoy our huge front porch, the weather and friends. It was such a simple thing that made us so excited. A friend of ours rode his bike over and stopped to have lunch with us. We've live out in the county for about 7 years and never knew we would miss having sidewalks and neighbors. Our new house is right in the middle of everything. We can't wait to be where God wants us to be. Chuck and I have searched for a while to find a church that was perfect for our family. The funny thing is we thought "WE" found the perfect church. Meanwhile, God had his own plan. Church was forming all around us with the people we did "LIFE" with. Church was right in front of us becoming bigger and stronger. Teaching us to love on one another. To support and uplift. To love our neighbor as ourself. To serve the poor and see people through God's eyes. These last few months we have truly realized what it means to be part of a church and why God wants us to love one another as ourselves. It's not about the building. It's about the love that we have for one another and what we do with it to make a better world. Thank you God for having another plan and letting me realize how truly blessed we are.

Things are coming along...

Things are coming along with our new house. Plumbing is about 80% done. Electric is 100% done. The butler pantry has a lot done. We have the dining room, living room and front room painted. It's shaping up into a beautiful house. It's starting to feel like a home. We have a ton of our friends pitching in to give us a hand on a lot of work. Here's some pics.

It Cost and Arm, Leg and Monkey Finger

Well...today was a sad but interesting Saturday Morning. I took Michael (My Grivet monkey) to the vet today. A while back Michael broke his finger. I took him to the vet to get it put back in place. Well...Michael decided to start chewing this finger off! The vet said let him do that with antibiotic and see if he chews it off. The finger ended up having the bone exposed. So, today we decided to remove his finger. I again had to help with sedating him which this time he did very well with it. The finger was removed and stitched up. He seems to be doing good. All this before 9am. I think I need a nap. :)

I turned 38...at least I think that's how old I am.

On Jan25th I turned 38 years old. I have seriously forgotten what my real age is because I stopped at 29! But the crazy thing is I still get ID for alcohol! How funny is that? I'm almost 40 and still get ID. So, for my birthday my husband took me out to the Olive Garden for dinner but before dinner I took some crazy picture with a few of my girls.

Stand By Me

I came across this awesome song during a time that I felt a friend of mine needed to hear it. It's actually an old song but the way it was put together was awesome. It was put together by different people across the world!Have a listen.

UPDATE: Juan

I am excited to say that I just saw Juan today and he is looking great! I saw him at "Food for Thought". Juan is working the program with The United Restoration Ministries. He is getting off the drugs and alcohol. Most importantly... he is off the streets and living in a warm place for the winter. I am hopeful that God will put him back together piece by piece this year and I can't wait to see how God works in Juan's life.

A Christmas wish come true!

On Christmas morning the whole family went to help out at "Food for Thought". My dear friend Juan came up to me and said he is in a program. He has a place to stay and they will help him get off drugs and alcohol. I met the Pastor and he told me where his place would be which is just down the street from our new house. I was so happy to hear that Juan is getting the help he needs. I can't wait to see what 2011 has to bring for my Dear friend Juan.

New House

We started doing some work at the new house. We got some plumbing done which cost a ton of money. We did some staining in the butler's pantry which is turning out awesome. We went with a red oak stain. There is so much more work to do. Right now, we have the boiler working in all the rooms. The sink working in the butler's pantry and one bathroom working.
